Introduction:

Although Carbon Fiber is an expensive and “exotic” material, it’s maintenance doesn’t have to be. With a little caution and these simple procedures, you can keep your investment properly protected and looking like new.

Carbon Fiber Cleaning and Care:

General Precautions:

Be careful not to nick or deeply scratch the clear coat on the Carbon Fiber. This can lead to water intrusion which will damage the finish and the integrity of the Carbon Fiber.

The clear coat also protects the structure from dust, dirt, and damaging UV rays.

If a nick or deep scratch does occur, seal the damaged area thoroughly with a clear coat touch up or clear nail polish.

Cleaning:

Carbon Fiber can be washed with any gentle cleanser or soap. If it is safe for the paint on your car, it will be safe for the Carbon Fiber.

In between washing, use a spray on detailer such as Chemical Guys Speed Wipe, available at ecstuning.com.

Dry with a soft microfiber towel to avoid scratches. Microfiber towels are available at ecstuning.com

Polishing:

If needed, the surface can be polished by hand or with a buffing tool, to remove small scratches or haziness from oxidation.

Begin by using a clay bar to remove stubborn contaminates that are not easily removed by washing.

Use a 2500-3000 grit optical grade polish such as Chemical Guys V38. If necessary to remove deeper scratches, use a 2000-2500 grit optical grade polish such as Chemical Guys V36, or a 1500-2000 grit optical grade polish such as Chemical Guys V34.

Always start with the finer grit then move to a more aggressive polish if necessary.

Sealing:

To retain the UV resistance and protect the finish from the elements, apply a high-quality carnauba wax after cleaning, such as Chemical Guys 3X wax.
