Anytime the battery is replaced on your newer BMW, you must register it using a scan tool.  This will only work, however, with an identical battery to the factory equipped battery being uninstalled. The battery will not register if you change from Lead Acid to AMG. Using an identical battery to factory equipment, this will tell the vehicle to recognize the type and condition of the battery, which will extend battery life.  We are performing this on our 2015 F30 335i, and the procedure will be the same or very similar on most BMW models.

1: Switch the ignition on (do not start engine) and plug in the scanner to OBDII port

2: Click on “BMW”

3: Click “BMW” Again

4: Click “Enter VIN”

5: Using the keyboard enter in the last 7 digits of your VIN

6: Select the vehicle that you are working on

7: Select Market Region

8: Select year

9: Confirm Make, Model, Year

9: Click “Service”

10: Click “Body”

11: Click “Power supply(battery)”

12: Click “Battery”

13: Click “Register Battery Replacement”

14: Click the “F2” button

15: Click the “F3” button

16: If the battery is a BMW component then click “Yes”

17: Click “ok”

18: If there is a matrix code then click “Yes”

19: Enter the middle 12 digit number using the keyboard
